What is...

Wireless Internet

A wireless internet connection is one that is transmitted between a local tower and a small receiver mounted on the roof or a pole at the customer’s home or business. The connection requires a line of sight with the tower which is often five miles or less from the customer. The difference with Safelink is our towers are linked to our fiber ring that connects to primary hubs in both Seattle and Salt Lake City for redundancy and better traffic control. Most other providers connect to 3rd party networks and rely on those providers to keep their service online.

Fiber Internet

Fiber internet is an internet connection that delivers data using light signals sent through small, glass fiber strands. It is considered the fastest connection available. The downside is it’s also very costly to install and is not available in many places. Safelink is looking to change that, though, and is actively expanding our fiber network. Not the airline model

No Overbooking

Like the airlines, most internet companies overbook their network assuming only a portion of their customers will use it at any moment. But with the rise of streaming videos and the increasing number of connected devices, that approach doesn’t work anymore.

Safelink takes a different approach. Once any of our towers reach 60% capacity, it is flagged for an upgrade so that we never even reach 100% usage. We believe that customers deserve the speeds they pay for and the only way to provide that is by managing the network. It isn’t the easiest thing to do, but we believe it’s the right thing to do.

Redundancy

Safelink internet is backed by a redundent 10 Gig fiber ring that is connected at hubs in both Seattle and Salt Lake City. This provides a strong, reliable, self-healing connection that automatically redirects traffic if one connection goes down.
